The Purpose of a Person

"The God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good." Genesis 1:31 NIV

When we think of a hippopotamus, the word "graceful" rarely comes to mind. Rather, we are likely to think of the words "cumbersome," "ugly," and "distorted." There is little to admire in the way a hippo looks or acts --- or so we think. They seem to be large, rocklike masses, ready to tip over any unsuspecting boat that may pass too close.

Visitors to a new exhibit at a popular zoo are learning otherwise, however. A large glass aquarium gives visitors an opportunity to watch hippos from a different vantage point --- under water.

They are surprised to discover that even with its short fat legs, bulky body, and oversized head, the hippopotamus is a very graceful, agile, and strong swimmer, capable of staying underwater for long periods of time. The tiny eyes of the hippo are better adapted to the underwater murkiness of African rivers than to bright sunlight. Indeed, the hippo spends much of its time foraging along the bottoms of rivers. The main function of the hippo in the natural order appears to be that of "channel clearer." Hippos eat enormous amounts of river grasses that grow along the banks of rivers, thus keeping the river free of blockades that might cause floods.

Ugly? Yes. But hippos are gifted in unusual ways and have a valuable role to play.

Every day you will encounter people who may seem awkward, different, ugly, or without much purpose. Look again! God has created each element of nature --- plant, mineral, bird, fish, and animal --- to fulfill a specific purpose and to do so with unique talents and abilities. There is an element of beauty, gracefulness and goodness in everything He creates.
